What is an Access Panel?
An access panel is a pre-fabricated door and frame that allows access into wall cavities or ceiling voids gaining entry to hidden services within the structure of the building. This allows access to components such as plumbing, electrical or HVAC systems and other utilities that may need regular servicing or inspections, without the need for demolition and reconstruction of the surrounding area. These panels can be fire tested, smoke sealed, airtight and with an acoustic rating.
You may come across access panels in residential, commercial, and industrial settings as they are particularly useful in crawl spaces, attics or service corridors. Some panels are required to be fitted into public spaces and can be equipped with different locks to increase security and prevent unauthorised access to these areas.
They are designed to blend in with surroundings so that no sacrifice has to be made for the design of the room. Because of this, access panels come in a variety of sizes and are available in a range of materials including plasterboard, metal and plastic. It is also possible to have bespoke panels made to fit individual needs for more intricate builds for optimal discretion.
